München, Germany

I landed in München and the first thing I noticed was how calm the city feels. It is busy, but not chaotic. People walk with purpose, the streets feel clean, and somehow even the air feels crisp. If you are visiting for the first time, this is the simple route I would recommend, because it flows naturally and you get the best parts of the city without rushing.

Where you should go and where I went

You should start your day at Marienplatz. That is exactly where I went first. It is the center of the old town and it instantly gives you that classic Munich feeling. I spent time just looking up at the architecture, especially the Neues Rathaus. Even if you do nothing else here, it is worth it to stand in the square for a while and take it in.

After Marienplatz, you should walk to Viktualienmarkt. It is close, and it is the best place to do a casual food stop without committing to a full meal. I went there right after Marienplatz and it turned into my favorite part of the morning. I told myself I would just look around. Then I bought a pretzel and ended up picking up a few small snacks just because everything looked good. It is the kind of place where you can build your own little lunch as you walk.

Next, you should go to Englischer Garten. It is huge, and it gives you a break from the city streets without leaving the city. The must see spot inside the park is Eisbachwelle, where people surf on a standing wave in the river. I walked into the park and followed the sound of water until I found the wave. I stood there for a long time watching. It is strangely relaxing, and you do not need to know anything about surfing to enjoy it. You can just show up and watch.

If you want a comfortable place to sit, you should stop at the Chinesischer Turm beer garden. It is a classic Munich experience, but it still feels local because so many people come here just to relax. I sat under the trees, rested my feet, and took my time. This was the point in the day where Munich really clicked for me. It is not only about sightseeing. It is about slowing down and enjoying where you are.

For the evening, you should go back toward the old town area and just walk. Munich looks especially nice around sunset and after the lights come on. If you want a classic lively dinner spot, Hofbräuhaus is the famous one. It is popular for a reason, but it can be crowded. If you prefer something calmer, there are plenty of restaurants nearby that feel more relaxed.
