Santorini, Greece

The first time I saw the caldera in Santorini, I just stopped walking. Everything is bright and quiet, and the sea looks unreal from up on the cliffs. If you are going for the first time, here is the simple way to do it, plus exactly what I did.

Where you should go and where I went

You should start in Fira because it is easy for getting around and it gives you that classic caldera view immediately. I walked the caldera path slowly, grabbed a coffee, and kept stopping for photos because every few minutes the view changes. This is also where I got my bearings for the island. You should also do the walk from Fira toward Imerovigli if you want the most consistent views without needing a car. I went late morning so the light was clean and bright. I took my time, sat on a quiet ledge for a bit, and treated it like the main event, not just a walk between towns.

There’s not much to do in santorini in the first place. It’s just an island. I remember walking around Oia near sunset, walked around the little streets, then picked a spot and stayed put. When the sun dropped, the whole town got quiet in a good way.

Also, when you have time (which is literally all the time) I think going to some cliff towns or beach towns is really nice. The black sand is part of what makes the island feel unique. I went midday, rented a chair, swam, then took a slow walk along the shore. It felt like a reset after all the stairs and viewpoints. You should visit the Red Beach if you want dramatic colors and a quick change of scenery from the white cliffs. I went for the view first, then spent a little time by the water. It is one of those places where the landscape is the highlight.
