My Service in ROK Army

There are certain chapters in life that do more than fill time. They reshape how you think.

For me, one of those chapters was my time serving in the Republic of Korea Army (ROK Army) from October 2021 to April 2023, assigned to the 7th Corps Headquarters as an Operations Data & Language Specialist.

At first, it may sound like a role built around spreadsheets, reports, and translation work. And yes, there was plenty of that. But for me, it became something much bigger. It was a period where I learned how discipline and creativity can exist together, and how even in a highly structured environment, there is room to build, improve, and make a real difference.

When people think of military service, they often imagine physical endurance, hierarchy, and routine. Those things are real. But what I remember most is the constant pressure to be reliable. Every day, in every task, no matter how small. I learned that responsibility is not always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like staying focused on repetitive work. Sometimes it means organizing chaos so other people can do their jobs better.

I had the opportunity to support joint missions with U.S. forces as a bilingual analyst. This was one of the most eye-opening parts of my service. Language, in those moments, was more than vocabulary. It was trust. It was timing. It was clarity under pressure. I learned that communication is not just about being correct but it is also about helping people move in the same direction. That lesson has stayed with me far beyond the military.

Around that same period of my life, I also challenged myself in a completely different way by participating in the Korean K-Startup competition, where I was fortunate to be part of a team that advanced to the top ranks. That experience reminded me that discipline from one world can be carried into another. Whether in uniform or in a startup setting, the core values felt similar: solve real problems, work with people, adapt quickly, and keep going when things get difficult.

My startup idea actually got nominated as the top 11 idea in Korea for the year 2022: https://www.aitimes.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=26620. I got to meet some very high people in the government through this experience.

Looking back, my military service was not just a duty I completed. It was a chapter that sharpened me.

It taught me that growth is often uncomfortable, that systems can always be improved, and that meaningful work is rarely glamorous in the moment. Most of all, it taught me that the habits we build in demanding seasons (discipline, humility, consistency, and teamwork) become part of who we are long after the season ends.

  1. Wow, I honestly didn’t know about this part of your life. I’ve always known you as my classmate and group member, so reading about your time in the ROK Army was really surprising. Now it actually makes a lot of sense. The discipline, focus, and reliability you show in our group work probably come from that experience. Serving in the army and working under pressure like that must have shaped the way you approach problems today. Really impressive journey!

This is a really powerful story and reflection. It’s impressive to see how your military service shaped not only your discipline and sense of responsibility but also your ability to communicate and work under pressure. I especially liked your point about reliability in everyday tasks—those small actions often make the biggest difference. It’s also inspiring how you carried those lessons into the K-Startup competition and entrepreneurship. Thank you for sharing this experience; it shows how meaningful and transformative that chapter of your life was.
